Inquiry reveals cattle cruelty at sea

ALMOST 300 cattle that perished on a live-export voyage from Fremantle to Egypt suffered a slow, cruel death, a Federal Government inquiry has found.

During 22 days at sea about 7400 cattle on the lower decks of Wellard Rural Export’s MV Ocean Shearer were “panting and gasping” for air and suffering from heat stress while standing in their own excrement, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service report says.

Live export investigation

On Monday 30 May 2011, Four Corners aired shocking footage of the torture that Australian bred animals are suffering following their live export to Indonesia.

GetUp! Action for Australia will be presenting a petition at Parliament House to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig:

“We call on you to immediately halt the live exports of Australian cattle to Indonesia and move towards an end to the live exports of Australian animals within 3 years.”

To add your voice to thousands of other Australians horrified by the barbaric treatment of our animals please go to http://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/animals/live-export/ban-live-export

Due to the overwhelming response of Australians you may have difficulty accessing the GetUp! site, we ask you to please persist as every voice counts.

If you would like to view the Four Corners report please go to “A Bloody Business” – please be warned the report may cause distress to viewers.

MLA knew about Indonesian horrors in May 2010

On Thursday, 9 June 2011, the Chairman of MLA, Don Heatley made several public comments denying that MLA had any prior knowledge of the horrific practices aired on the Four Corners program “A Bloody Business”.

Mr. Heatley said:

“If there was complete and utter knowledge of the brutality, the grotesque brutality that we saw recently, we would have been in there immediately”

The MLA also released a public statement on their website that asserted:

“MLA had no prior knowledge of the brutal treatment of animals illustrated in recent media coverage, prior to being shown the footage.”

The AMIEU now releases a fact sheet sourced from MLA and LiveCorp’s own documents that establishes that the horrific practices seen on Four Corners were reported to MLA and LiveCorp in May 2010.

The AMIEU calls upon MLA and the Chairman to correct their misleading public statements.
Fact Sheet: Were the MLA and LiveCorp Aware of the Horrific Slaughtering Practices in Indonesia Prior to June 2011?
